Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

01What is Whoopal?
Whoopal is an independent, community-run leaderboard for WHOOP wearable data — recovery score, strain, HRV, and sleep. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by WHOOP Inc. You can browse the full leaderboard without an account. To add your own data and see your personal rank, sign in with WHOOP — your data syncs automatically.
02Is Whoopal free?
Yes, completely free. There is no subscription, no freemium tier, and no paywall on any leaderboard feature. Whoopal is maintained by a single founder. The adapter shop (mechanical adapters for WHOOP bands) is a separate paid product that funds the platform — but everything on the leaderboard side costs nothing.
03How does the leaderboard work?
The leaderboard ranks athletes by recovery score, strain, HRV, and sleep quality. When you connect via WHOOP OAuth, only the metrics you explicitly authorize are read. You can filter by age group, sport, and country. Your entry only appears on the public leaderboard if you choose to join — browsing is always anonymous.
04Do I need a WHOOP device to use Whoopal?
No. Anyone can browse the leaderboard without owning a WHOOP device or creating an account. To appear on the leaderboard yourself, you need an active WHOOP subscription (any generation) so you can sign in via the official WHOOP API.
05What do Recovery, Strain, HRV, and Sleep scores mean?
These are the four core metrics WHOOP calculates from its sensors. Recovery (0–100%) reflects how ready your body is to perform based on resting heart rate, HRV, and sleep quality. Strain (0–21) measures cardiovascular load accumulated during the day. HRV (heart rate variability, in milliseconds) is the most sensitive marker of nervous-system readiness. Sleep score (0–100%) rates duration, efficiency, and time in restorative stages. Whoopal shows your numbers alongside the community distribution so you can see where you stand.
06Is this free?
Yes. The leaderboard, dashboard, and WHOOP Connect (OAuth) are all completely free.
07What WHOOP data can I access?
Recovery scores, HRV, resting heart rate, strain, sleep stages and performance, workout data (activity, HR zones, calories), and journal entries.
08Is my data secure?
Yes. WHOOP Connect uses read-only OAuth scopes and HTTPS encryption end-to-end. We only fetch the metrics you explicitly authorize via WHOOP's OAuth flow, store them encrypted at rest, and never sell or share them with third parties.
09How is this different from the WHOOP app?
Whoopal offers deeper analytics (correlation charts, journal habit impact, trend comparisons), a public anonymous leaderboard with demographic filters, and the ability to export/share summaries — features the WHOOP app doesn't provide.
10Can I delete my data?
Yes. Click "Clear All Data" on the dashboard to instantly remove all data from your browser. With OAuth, revoke access from your WHOOP account settings at any time.
11How long does the initial sync take?
On first connect we backfill the last 12 months of your WHOOP data — typically a few minutes. After that, new days appear automatically within minutes of WHOOP recording them. You can also click "Fetch more history" on your dashboard to pull older data.
12How do I disconnect my WHOOP from Whoopal?
There are two ways. From Whoopal: click "Delete All Data" on your dashboard. From WHOOP directly: go to app.whoop.com → Settings → Connected Apps and revoke Whoopal's access there. Revoking from WHOOP is the authoritative way to stop all data flow immediately.
13What happens to my data if I disconnect?
Whoopal immediately stops receiving new data from WHOOP. Any data already synced remains in your dashboard until you delete it manually. Click "Delete All Data" on the dashboard to remove everything instantly.
14How long does Whoopal keep my data after I disconnect?
Whoopal does not retain OAuth data on its servers beyond the active session. Your synced data lives in your browser's localStorage — it persists only until you clear it or click "Delete All Data." We do not keep copies server-side after you revoke access.
15Why does the connection sometimes fail or time out?
Most failures happen for one of three reasons: (1) the WHOOP OAuth session expired — try signing in again; (2) a temporary WHOOP API outage — wait a few minutes and retry; (3) a browser extension blocking the OAuth redirect — try in a private/incognito window. If the problem persists, reach out at [email protected].
